As part of a community so personally invested in the military, Woodlands is proud to welcome Dr. Emmanuel Cruz Caban to our Primary Care division. Dr. Cruz has served at home and abroad as not only a doctor, but an Air Force Officer and an Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine to civilians and servicemembers alike. This experience, combined with a history rich in research and published writing, equips Dr. Cruz to both treat and educate his patients.

 
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Dr. Cruz graduated cum laude with a Bachelor in Biology Science from University of Puerto Rico’s Mayaguez Campus (2003), followed by a Doctorate in Medicine – also cum laude – from San Juan Bautista School of Medicine in Caguas (2008). He then completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at New York’s Beth Israel Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

 
While in Puerto Rico, Dr. Cruz was part of the research staff of the Internal Medicine Department at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Science Campus in San Juan. He has subsequently published research on topics including genetic and metabolic diseases, neurological diseases, and critical care.  In 2012, Dr. Cruz was assigned to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. There, he managed and taught medical students while overseeing internal medicine wards, the outpatient clinic, and the ICU. Concurrently, he was an assistant professor in Internal Medicine at nearby Wright State University and the Uniformed Services School of the Health Sciences. During this time, Dr. Cruz also spent three months at a base in Lakenheath, UK, as part of the internal medicine staff.

Dr. Cruz’s certifications include ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine and University of Tennessee, Lean for Outpatient Settings, and he has completed a trauma rotation at the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Center. Dr. Cruz is currently (or has been) a member of American Medical School Association, Puerto Rico Medical Association, American Medical Association, Society of Hospital Medicine, American Thoracic Society, and the American College of Physician.

In his free time, Dr. Cruz enjoys reading, spending time with his family, water sports, and playing basketball.
