Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should keep doing so for as long as they are in good health. While mammograms can miss some cancers, they are still a very good way to find breast cancer. Diagnostic mammograms are used for women who have possible abnormalities that could indicate cancer or another breast health problem.

Why 3D Mammography?

  • Detailed Imaging: 3D mammography captures multiple images of the breast from different angles, providing a more comprehensive and detailed view of the breast tissue.
  • Improved Accuracy: The advanced technology reduces the likelihood of false positives and negatives, improving the accuracy of breast cancer detection.
  • Enhanced Early Detection: Early detection is crucial for successful treatment. 3D mammography increases the chances of detecting breast cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages.
Breast Health Guidelines: Empowering Women Through Regular Mammograms
At Woodlands Breast Health, we believe in empowering women to take control of their health, and one crucial aspect of this is regular screening mammograms. We adhere to the recommended guidelines that women ages 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and follow the recommendations given by the radiologist and their healthcare provider.

Why Yearly Mammograms?

  • Early Detection: Screening mammograms are the cornerstone in the early detection of breast cancer. Detecting cancer in its early stages significantly improves treatment outcomes and increases the chances of successful recovery.
  • Consistent Monitoring: Annual mammograms provide a consistent and reliable method for monitoring breast health over time. This continuity is essential for identifying any subtle changes or abnormalities that may occur.
  • Risk Assessment: As women age, the risk of developing breast cancer CAN increase. Yearly mammograms play a crucial role in assessing and managing this risk, allowing for proactive measures if needed.

The Strengths of Mammography:
While it’s important to acknowledge that mammograms may not detect every instance of breast cancer, they remain a highly effective and widely recognized method for early detection. The benefits of screening mammography include:

  • High Sensitivity: Mammograms have a high sensitivity in detecting breast abnormalities, even before symptoms become apparent.
  • Proven Track Record: Over the years, mammography has proven to be a valuable tool in reducing breast cancer mortality rates through early detection and intervention.
  • Comprehensive Evaluation: Regular screening mammograms allow for a comprehensive evaluation of breast tissue, enabling healthcare professionals to identify potential issues at their earliest stages.

Diagnostic Mammograms: A Closer Look
Women who are experiencing any Breast Health concerns will require a Diagnostic mammogram.

These mammograms go beyond routine screenings and are specifically tailored to investigate and assess specific concerns.

Our team of dedicated Breast Health Radiologists, with over 45 years of collective experience, is here to guide you through every step of the process. Whether it’s a routine screening or a diagnostic mammogram, Woodlands Breast Health is committed to providing thorough and accurate assessments for your peace of mind.

Ultrasound: A Valuable Companion to Mammography in Breast Health
At Woodlands Breast Health, we recognize the importance of utilizing advanced technologies to ensure a comprehensive approach to breast health. Ultrasound, a diagnostic tool that utilize sound waves to outline parts of the body, and plays a crucial role in our commitment to PROVIDE thorough and precise examinations.

How Ultrasound Works:
Ultrasound technology operates by sending sound waves into the body, and the echoes produced are then captured by a computer to generate detailed images on a screen. This non-invasive and radiation-free technique allows for a TARGETED examination of breast tissue, aiding in the detection and characterization of abnormalities.

Complementing Mammography:
Ultrasound serves as an excellent complement to mammography for several reasons:

  • Widespread Availability: Ultrasound is widely available and cost-effective, making it an accessible diagnostic tool for many patients.
  • Enhanced Detail: While mammography provides detailed images of breast tissue, ultrasound offers additional information by capturing images from a different perspective. This can be particularly useful in examining a specific area of concern identified during a mammogram.
  • Differentiating Cysts and Tumors: Ultrasound is effective in distinguishing between cysts and solid masses (tumors) without the need for invasive procedures. This information is valuable for determining the nature of abnormalities and guiding further diagnostic or treatment decisions.

Supplementing, Not Replacing Mammograms:
It’s important to emphasize that while ultrasound is a valuable tool, it should not be used as a substitute for mammograms. Mammography remains the primary screening method for breast cancer due to its effectiveness in detecting early signs of the disease and capturing calcifications that can be missed with Ultrasound.

Targeted Use for Specific Concerns:
Ultrasound is typically utilized to investigate a particular area of concern identified by a mammogram. This targeted approach allows healthcare professionals to focus on specific regions, ensuring a thorough examination and accurate assessment of any abnormalities.

Advancing Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Staging: The Role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
We are committed to employing the most advanced diagnostic tools to ensure precise and comprehensive breast cancer evaluation. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a key component of our diagnostic arsenal, contributing significantly to the diagnosis and staging of breast cancer.

Understanding MRI in Breast Health:
Magnetic Resonance Imaging utilizes powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the breast. This non-invasive technique provides a comprehensive view of breast tissue, allowing for a thorough examination of any potential abnormalities.

Beyond Mammography:
While mammography is an essential screening tool, MRI becomes particularly valuable in certain scenarios:

  • High-Risk Individuals: MRI is recommended for women with at 20% lifetime risk for developing breast cancer. It serves as an additional screening method for this specific demographic, working in conjunction with a yearly mammogram.
  • Diagnostic and Staging Tool: MRI is instrumental in diagnosing and staging breast cancer, providing detailed information about the size, location, and characteristics of tumors. This information is crucial for developing an effective treatment plan.

Limitations of MRI as a Sole Screening Tool:

While MRI is a powerful diagnostic tool, it is not generally recommended as a standalone screening tool. This is due to a few considerations:

  • Possibility of Missed Cancers: MRI may not detect some cancers that mammograms would find. Therefore, the combination of both methods is essential for a comprehensive screening approach.
  • Cost and Availability: MRI is often more resource-intensive and costly compared to mammography, making it less practical for routine screenings in the general population.
Biopsy: Definitive Answers in Breast Cancer Diagnosis
When facing the possibility of breast cancer, a biopsy emerges as a crucial step, providing definitive answers that guide subsequent treatment decisions. At Woodlands Breast Health, we understand the significance of this diagnostic procedure and strive to make the process as informative and supportive as possible.

The Need for Biopsy:
A biopsy becomes necessary when other diagnostic tests indicate a potential presence of breast cancer. While preliminary screenings such as mammography, ultrasound, and MRI offer valuable insights, a biopsy is the definitive method for confirming the diagnosis.

Understanding the Biopsy Procedure:
During a biopsy, cells from the area of concern are delicately and precisely removed to be studied in the laboratory. This in-depth analysis is essential for determining the nature of the abnormality, whether it is benign or malignant, and providing crucial information for formulating an appropriate treatment plan.

Tailored Approach to Biopsy:
There are several types of biopsies, each uniquely suited to different scenarios. Our experienced healthcare professionals at Woodlands Breast Health carefully consider your individual circumstances to determine the most appropriate biopsy method for you. This personalized approach ensures the accuracy and relevance of the biopsy results.

Types of Biopsies:

  • Stereotactic Biopsy: These biopsies involve utilizing the Mammography Machine aiding in the biopsy of calcifications found in the breast.
  • Ultrasound Guided Biopsy: An Ultrasound guided biopsy that removes suspicious tissue found on previous imaging, depending on the radiologist recommendations these biopsies could include the following:
    • Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA): Involves using a thin needle to withdraw a small sample of tissue or fluid for examination.
    • Core Needle Biopsy: Utilizes a larger needle to remove a core of tissue for more extensive analysis.
  • MRI Breast Biopsy: A MRI guided biopsy utilizes a powerful magnetic field and imaging to assist the radiologist to obtain tissue samples, the MRI guidance helps calculate the precise location  and is minimally invasive.
  • Surgical Biopsy: Removes a larger portion of the tissue or the entire mass for a comprehensive examination, this is usually completed by a general surgeon.

Empowering You with Information:
Woodlands Breast Health prioritizes providing you with the information and support you need throughout the biopsy process. Our team of dedicated healthcare professionals ensures that you are well-informed about the procedure, its purpose, and what to expect.
